SKA played the third match of this KHL road trip against HC Avtomobilist in Yekaterinburg. Head coach instated Igor Shestyorkin between the pipes for this game, giving the latter his first appearance for almost a month. Czech Jakub Kovar was Avtomobilist's starting goaltender.
Both teams played a tight game during the first period, not giving each other a lot of space to create scoring opportunities. However, SKA had a huge chance to take the lead when Pavel Datsyuk was gifted a penalty shot. The Magic Man couldn't make it count though, firing into the goalkeeper when taking aim. Igor Shestyorkin made one superb save in the period, denying Anatoly Golyshev who was clean through.
Unfortunately, the hosts took the initiative in the second period. Vitaly Popov made the breakthrough for Avtomobilist, catching Igor Shestyorkin cold with a rasping wrist shot. Evgeny Chesalin then doubled their advantage, poking in at point blank range. Sergei Plotnikov got one back when lashing a one timer in from the right faceoff circle, before Anatoly Golyshev netted on a juicy rebound to make it 3:1. Nevertheless, SKA got back to within one before the period ended, as Nikita Gusev somehow scored from an impossible angle.
The hosts came flying out in the third frame, putting the pressure on SKA. To our horror, Evgeny Chesalin scored their fourth on the powerplay, getting the better of Igor Shestyorkin when 1 on 1. Nikita Gusev hit the jackpot on the doorstep with five minutes remaining, but SKA couldn't find that all important equaliser. 3:4, SKA lose against HC Avtomobilist in Yekaterinburg.
