SKA returned to Saint Petersburg for a KHL home match against HC Sochi. Head coach Oleg Znarok brought Patrik Hersley back into the line-up for this match, while Mikko Koskinen was given a start between the pipes. Dmitry Shikin, who used to play for SKA, was Sochi's starting goaltender.
Our players started on the front foot at the Ice Palace, but Sochi's defence was proving difficult to break down. The away defensemen closed down all shooting lanes in their zone, forcing SKA to stay on the outside. However, a powerplay opened the doors for SKA to break the deadlock. A beautiful Maxim Karpov pass found Sergei Plotnikov on the right faceoff circle, and the latter expertly wristed over the goalkeeper's glove.
That goal gave SKA a measure of control, but the team struggled in the second period. Sochi grew in confidence as time rolled on, with their players creating more chances by SKA's net. Unfortunately, their pressure eventually resulted in a goal. Ilya Khokhlov was the scorer, thumping a slap shot under Mikko Koskinen's blocker. Buoyed by their equaliser, Sochi continued taking the game to SKA. With the period drawing to a close, the visitors took their first lead of the game. Evgeny Lapenkov skated down the right wing, took aim, and caught Mikko Koskinen cold. 1:2 after 40 minutes.
Needing goals, SKA laid seige to the Sochi net during the third period. Dmitry Shikin was working miracles for the away side, saving sixteen shots in the frame. Maxim Karpov and Sergei Plotnikov both smacked the pipe, before Patrik Hersley saw two huge one timers stopped. Time was running out, but with nine minutes remaining, SKA finally tied the game. Vyacheslav Voynov's slap shot took a slight deflection off a Sochi player, a ricochet which fooled Dmitry Shikin.
It went to overtime, where Sochi managed to claim an unlikely victory. Sean Collins beat Mikko Koskinen at point blank range, putting an end to SKA's 20 match winning streak.
