HOW THE SEASON UNFOLDED
Following an impressive 2018/2019 campaign with Salavat Yulaev, Joonas transferred to SKA last year, having left Ufa as a free agent. At the start of the season, the powerful Finnish forward was placed in a line with Nail Yakupov and Alexander Barabanov, before the coaches subsequently decided to make changes to the team. Joonas was eventually put a line with Evgeny Ketov and Sergei Plotnikov for the end of the KHL regular season and the first round of the Gagarin Cup playoffs.
His first KHL goal for SKA was scored towards the back end of October.
Statistically, Joonas didn't enjoy the best regular season of his career, but he made a large improvement for the playoffs as he scored two goals and dished out one assist in the four victorious games against Vityaz Podolsk. His marker in the second match with Vityaz proved decisive as SKA prevailed 4:3 at the Ice Palace to take a 2-0 series advantage to Moscow Region.
Furthermore, Joonas also scored the winner in the first game against Vityaz, and he contribued with the vital assist for Sergei Plotnikov's marker in the fourth match which sent the duel to overtime.
"I found it difficult at the start of the season, but as the campaign progressed, I started to participate in more matches and consequently feel better. I had lots of confidence before the start of the playoffs," stated Joonas when speaking to the media during the season.
Interestingly, on February 13, three players from one particular foreign country scored goals in one game, as Finnish forwards Joonas, Jarno Koskiranta and Jori Lehtera all found the net in a game against Torpedo in Nizhny Novgorod.
Joonas is rightly regarded as one of the strongest players in the KHL in terms of faceoffs. Overall, the experienced 32-year-old Finn was a part of 723 faceoffs in the regular season, winning 441 (61%) of them. Out of all remaining KHL players who also participated in at least 100 faceoffs, only Patrice Cormier (66.8%) and Justin Azevedo (62.1%) won more than Joonas.
