HOW THE SEASON TURNED OUT
Initially, Ivan Morozov was a part of the SKA-Neva team in the VHL during the first part of the season, but he earned a chance with the senior side following his excellent performances at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship with Russia. Ivan starred with his showings alongside Kirill Marchenko and Vasily Podkolzin.
It didn't take long for Ivan to begin scoring with regularity. When playing against Barys in his fourth KHL game of the 2019/2020 season, Ivan grabbed his maiden goal with a wonderful effort, before he subsequently hit the target in matches with Torpedo (one goal) and Dinamo Minsk (two goals). In that particular game against Dinamo Minsk in Saint Petersburg, Ivan was the star of the show in SKA's large victory, scoring twice and dishing out an assist.
Moreover, in 16 KHL regular season games, Ivan was on the ice for 14 SKA goals.
In the ensuing Gagarin Cup playoffs, the young forward continued playing a key role for SKA, providing two assists in the second match before scoring a goal of his own in the third as our team comfortably swept Vityaz Podolsk 4-0. Interestingly, this wasn't the first time when Ivan competed in the KHL playoffs, as he had received minutes in the 2018/2019 campaign in matches against Spartak Moscow and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
"Once, I saw how some players scored a goal on the powerplay, and I decided to send the video to my teammates. We subsequently tried the move in a game, and it worked," said Ivan when looking back at the season.
