Following his arrival from Linkoping, Lukas Bengtsson subsequently received an injury in the first KHL match of the campaign against Metallurg Magnitogorsk, which consequently meant that he had to sit on the sidelines for a long period of time before eventually returning three and a half months later.

Nevertheless, the Swedish defenseman quickly adapted to life in Russian ice hockey after regaining full fitness, immediately transforming into one of SKA's leading defensemen. A hugely reliable player who makes very few mistakes, Lukas stood out for SKA during the remainder of the campaign, competing in a calm, classy manner. Lukas managed to register an impressive haul of 13 points in the regular season as he was nearly always picked in the first line.

On December 17, Lukas even managed to score in his first game for SKA since recovering, smashing a huge one-timer into the net in a dramatic victory against Severstal Cherepovets at the Saint Petersburg Ice Palace.

Lukas improved even further in the KHL Gagarin Cup playoffs.

In the fourth match of the series, the Swede tallied the latest ever SKA goal in the competition (113:27), hitting the target with an unstoppable slapshot on the powerplay to secure progression to the second phase with a 3:2 triumph and a 4-0 series win. Overall, Lukas picked up three points in the playoffs, dishing out two assists alongside his crucial marker.

"In order to win in the KHL, you have to be united," stated Lukas during one of his interviews with the press. "We must continue in this manner."

A superb passer of the puck, Lukas completed 87.9% of his passes in the KHL, second only to Marc-Andre Gragnani of Dinamo Minsk (88.1%).

SKA will certainly be hoping for more of the same from the gifted 26-year-old in the 2020/2021 season. He was previously on the books of the Pittsburgh Penguins organisation in the NHL between 2016 and 2018.
