HOW THE SEASON TURNED OUT
Vasily Podkolzin was touted as perhaps the most talented player of his generation after shining at the 2018 Hlinka/Gretzky Memorial Cup. In the following KHL season, he subsequently made his senior debut in a match against Avtomobilist, becoming the first player born in the XXI century to play in the league. Interestingly, in his very first KHL shift, the gifted forward was placed in one line with Pavel Datsyuk and Nikita Gusev.
He eventually became a mainstay in the senior SKA squad after the 2020 World Junior Championship.
Competing in a line with Kirill Marchenko and Ivan Morozov, Vasily shone during the second half of the 2019/2020 campaign, standing out with his energy and desire. On January 21, he managed to score his maiden goal in the KHL, finding the net against HC CSKA in Moscow with a wonderful individual effort.
In the subsequent KHL Gagarin Cup playoffs first round series against Vityaz Podolsk, Vasily scored the youngest SKA goal in the competition's history, hitting the target in the second match. Furthermore, despite still being a teenager, the 18-year-old wasn't afraid to participate in a fight during a match against Dinamo Minsk at the Saint Petersburg Ice Palace in January. Vasily floored his opponent in an impressive show of strength.
"I believe in my teammates, and they believe in me," stated Vasily. "Our belief really helps."
The 2020/2021 season promises to be a fascinating one. Having regularly displayed his clear ability, more pressure will be on Vasily's shoulders to take a leading role for SKA on the ice, but he's already proven that he is capable of producing the goods in key moments.
