For the first time in Russian history, SKA won the opening match of the new season by five goals. The previous record was a 5:1 victory against Avangard in Omsk on September 6, 2013. However, in the 1955 USSR championship, our team defeated Dynamo Novosibirsk 9:1 in the opening game.
6:1 is a repeat of SKA's largest victory against HC Ak Bars Kazan in Tatarstan, following in the footsteps of the victory by the same scoreline in the fifth match of the 2014/2015 KHL Gagarin Cup final on April 19, 2015.
This was the third occasion when SKA began the new campaign with a match against the Kazan outfit after a 1:1 draw on September 2, 1990 and a 3:4 loss on September 9, 1994.
For the second consecutive year, Swedish defenseman Patrik Hersley scored the first goal of the KHL season. On August 21, 2017 he opened the scoring in a 4:2 victory against HC CSKA Moscow in the KHL Opening Cup triumph in Saint Petersburg. Interestingly in 2017, he found the net after 03:21 minutes of play compared to 03:50 this year.
Tony Martensson (2011), Jimmie Ericsson (2014) and Joakim Lindstrom (2015) were the other Swedes to score SKA's maiden goal of the KHL campaign.

Forward Viktor Tikhonov notched his 90th SKA goal while Ilya Kablukov grabbed his 50th in Russian championships. 23 of them have been for the Saint Petersburg club.
