SKA begun this KHL away series with a match against HC Avangard Omsk in Siberia. Head coach Oleg Znarok instated defenseman Vyacheslav Voynov into the line-up for his first appearance of the 2017/2018 season, while Mikhail Maltsev kept his place in the second line. Igor Shestyorkin and Dominik Furch were the starting goaltenders.
In front of their home fans, Avangard made a positive start. Evgeny Medvedev should have broken the deadlock in the very first shift, but Igor Shestyorkin denied him with a sharp blocker save. Unfortunately, the hosts did eventually draw first blood midway through the period - hanging on the crease, Dennis Everberg tipped Andre Petterson's effort past Igor Shestyorkin. Avangard were dominant, however SKA hit back with two sucker punchers which turned the game on its head. Sergei Kalinin deflected Patrik Hersley's wrist shot in on the powerplay, before David Rundblad scored his first SKA goal with a driven attempt into the far right corner.
Holding a 2:1 advantage, SKA improved in the second period. Dominik Furch kept Avangard in the match by making a few excellent saves, the pick of the bunch being a flashy glove stop against Nikolai Prokhorkin. Nevertheless, Avangard were proving to be dangerous on the counterattack. Valentin Pyanov thought that he had equalised, but his one timer was somehow saved by Igor Shestyorkin's mask.
The match's decisive moment came late in the third period. Alexander Osipov crashed into Sergei Shirokov from behind, a challenge which earned the Avangard defenseman a 5+20 penalty with just seven minutes remaining. Avangard then committed another foul moments later, ill-discipline which resulted in Patrik Hersley lashing a thunderbolt home to finish the match. 3:1, SKA beat Avangard and make it 13 consecutive KHL wins! This has become a league record.
