In a hard-fought battle, SKA made it three out of three against Dynamo Moscow on the road in the 2022/2023 KHL regular season, claiming a tense 2:1 triumph in overtime.

The first period certainly wasn’t anything to write home about.

The two sides only managed to tally a combined total of seven shots on target during the maiden 20 minutes. However, Dynamo did manage to score with one of their four efforts.

Seconds after a powerplay had ended, former SKA forward Alexander Skorenov whipped a rebound past goaltender Dmitry Nikolaev when unmarked on the left faceoff circle.

Earlier on, the hosts had wasted a great opportunity, with Maxim Dzhioshvili unable to turn the loose puck over the line after the initial attempt from distance had struck the right post.

SKA did at least manage to create a handful of promising chances in the second stanza.

Towards the end of the period, Alexander Nikishin and Vasily Glotov both came close for our team, thumping searing one-timers wide of the mark. For their part, Dynamo were gifted two powerplays, but Nikolaev was barely troubled in our net. The only shot of note was a huge effort from Andrei Mironov which whizzed past the right post.

To our delight, SKA equalised in the very first shift of the third period.

On the left flank, Nikita Gusev gathered the bouncing puck during a broken play and expertly lashed it between Konstantin Volkov’s pads.

Not long later, Pavel Kudryatsev could have immediately reinstated Dynamo's advantage, but his wrister cannoned back off the right post.

The remainder of the frame was contested intensely across the ice. Not willing to give up an inch, the teams matched each other in all zones, with the goalkeepers not being called into action on a regular basis. Midway through the period, SKA were presented with a four-minute long powerplay after Dynamo forward Alexei Potapov committed high-sticking, but the Muscovites kept our players at a safe distance.

Unsurprisingly, overtime was indeed required.

At the start of the extra period, Nikolaev came to the rescue for SKA, pulling off a superb save to shut the door on Kudryatsev. Ivan Igumnov promptly pounced on the rebound, but his wrist shot was brilliantly hooked off the line by Alexander Volkov.

SKA subsequently struck the decisive blow with a little over a minute remaining.

Having intelligently been found by Marat Khusnutdinov, Gusev smacked the puck into the empty net with Volkov caught horribly out of position.

SKA will now prepare to face Dinamo Minsk in Belarus on Thursday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 19:10 local time.
