In Helsinki, the senior Russian national team took on Croatia for the first Karjala Cup fixture. SKA goaltenders Igor Shestyorkin made up the goalkeeping duel.
Joonas Kempainnen was the only player to score in the first period, giving the Finns a 1:0 advantage. Miro Hieskanen doubled the Finnish advantage in the second stanza, however Kirill Kaprizov and SKA's Sergei Plotnikov got Russia back on terms.
Unfortunately, Atte Ohtamaa netted the crucial marker in the third frame, sealing a 3:2 Finnish victory.
