Today, on September 2, SKA will compete against HC Severstal Cherepovets on the road in the opening match of the 2021/2022 KHL regular season.

Last week, these two teams met at the Nikolai Puchkov Tournament, with Severstal winning 3:2 in an eventful game in Saint Petersburg. After Andrei Alexeev, Igor Geraskin and Estonian Robert Rooba had scored three consecutive goals, Severstal looked to be home and dry, but Vladislav Kamenev and Anton Burdasov subsequently hit the jackpot on the powerplay to bring SKA to within one. However, despite late pressing, Severstal and impressive goalkeeper Konstantin Shostak held on to their slender advantage.

Severstal have signed the likes of Jakob Stenqvist (defenseman), Robin Press (defenseman) and Rooba (forward) in the pre-season, with head coach Andrei Razin's men looking to improve on last year's showing of qualifying for the first round of the KHL Gagarin Cup playoffs.

These are the results of the four 2020/2021 KHL matches between these two teams:

14.11.2020. Severstal - SKA - 0:2 (Kuzmenko 08:05, Aaltonen (25.36)

26.11.2020. Severstal - SKA - 2:3 (Petunin 31:12, Vovchenko 33.44; Kemppainen 45:28, Burdasov 46:41, Ketov 53:32)

24.12. 2020. SKA - Severstal - 2:0 (Kemppainen 43:14, 48:28)

27.01.2021. SKA - Severstal - 4:1 (Burdasov 09:58, 58:47, Podkolzin 31:38, Morozov 56:19)
