In the first match of this particular road trip, SKA just had enough power to defeat Sibir Novosibirsk, emerging victorious by a score of 4:3 in the 2021/2022 KHL regular season.
SKA shaded the first period, with Leo Komarov pouncing on a mistake from Sibir goalkeeper Harri Sateri to open the scoring the fourth minute. In the box seat, our players subsequently doubled their money at the start of the second stanza, as Nikita Gusev connected with a superb pass from Andrei Kuzmenko to neatly slide the puck into the net on the powerplay.
Sibir soon got one back, though, as Nick Shore took advantage of a poor defensive error to score with Lars Johansson completely helpless.
Anton Burdasov promptly reinstated the two-goal lead when clean through in the 27th minute. However, instead of caving in Sibir were in a determined mood, and Jurki Jokipakka's strong slap shot halved the deficit. That goal arrived moments after Sibir had had a marker disallowed for offside.
Matters were about to get worse for SKA.
With around eight minutes remaining in the period, Sibir forward Nikita Setdikov sharply cut to the slot from the right flank and got the better of Johansson.
Proceedings were consequently somewhat tense in the ensuing third period.
To our relief, it was SKA who tallied the decisive go-ahead goal. After escaping his marker on the right faceoff circle, Mikhail Vorobyov received a clever pass and sent a searing one-timer beyond Sateri.
Sibir played 6-on-4 in the closing couple of minutes after pulling Sateri and seeing SKA forward Zakhar Bardakov commit interference. But, to our delight, our team successfully held on.
SKA will now prepare to face Amur Khabarovsk on Monday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 12:00 Moscow time.
