SKA struggled for long periods against HC Barys Astana, but after scoring a late equaliser to save the game in the third period, the team snatched a 3:2 penalty shootout win.
The game started in perfect fashion for SKA. In the first period, Anton Belov received a superb pass from Nikita Gusev on the doorstep, sliding the puck beyond opposing goalkeeper Henrik Karlsson. However, after that goal, our players struggled and Barys managed to equalise in the second frame as Jesse Blacker tipped past Magnus Hellberg at point blank range.
Moments later, Egor Petukhov thought he had given Barys the lead, but when he took advantage of a sloppy error from the goalkeeper, the puck struck both posts and the goal was waved off after video review.
Neverthelss, Barys did eventually score their second in the third period, as Brandon Bochenski lashed the loose puck in from the left faceoff circle. SKA were in trouble, but with five minutes remaining, Vladislav Gavrikov equalised with a rocket.
It went all the way to penalty shots, where Pavel Datsyuk, Nikita Gusev and Nikolai Prokhorkin struck gold to seal a dramatic 3:2 win! SKA will now prepare to host HC Dinamo Riga at the Yubileyny Stadium in Saint Petersburg on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 17:00 local time.
