In a tense battle, SKA just came up short against Barys Nur-Sultan at the Ice Palace, conceding a narrow 3:4 defeat in the 2021/2022 KHL regular season after a penalty shootout.

The opponents made the faster start in Saint Petersburg. Coming out of the blocks with all guns blazing, the Kazakhs immediately took the game to SKA, applying pressure and taking the lead in the sixth minute.

On a goalmouth scramble, Kirill Savitsky forced the puck beyond the helpless Alexander Samonov.

Samonov kept SKA in the match by pulling off a series of excellent stops throughout the first period. Towards the end of the frame, SKA did begin to create a couple of chances, but Barys were controlling the pace of the game and protecting goaltender Joni Ortio effectively.

Proceedings suddenly became a lot more dramatic in the second stanza.

In the second minute of the period, Valentin Zykov expertly tipped Emil Galimov’s effort in to score his first SKA goal, before the lively Nikita Mikhailis went top-shelf on Samonov for Barys on the powerplay. SKA had the perfect response, though, as Anton Burdasov hit the jackpot when clean through at the second attempt and Galimov got his name on the scoreboard with a bullet from the right faceoff circle.

However, Barys weren’t about to lie down and wave the white flag, and the Kazakhs tallied their third marker on the man advantage in the 39th minute with the evergreen Roman Starchenko catching Samonov cold from the left flank.

The third period saw both teams opt for a more cautious approach. In truth, barely any major chances were witnessed, as Barys held firm in defence and waited for counter-attack opportunities. Following a sloppy mistake from Daniil Pylenkov, Starchenko was presented with a golden chance on the crease, but he could only backhand wide of the left post with only Samonov to beat.

SKA had much the better of the play in the ensuing overtime period. Burdasov, Linden Vey and Nikita Gusev could all have tallied the winner for the home team, as their attempts were fielded by the impressive Ortio in the Barys net.

Ortio would subsequently become the Barys hero in the penalty shootout. With the Finn only conceding from Marat Khusnutdinov, and Jakob Lilja and Mikhailis netting for Barys, SKA did indeed have to be satisfied with just the one point.

SKA will now prepare to host Jokerit Helsinki on Tuesday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 19:30 local time.
