SKA returned to Saint Petersburg for a KHL home match against HC Sibir Novosibirsk. These two teams met last week in Siberia, with SKA winning 3:0. Head coach Oleg Znarok made a few changes for this game, notably putting Mikko Koskinen between the pipes. Alexei Krasikov was Sibir's starting goalkeeper.
Our players made a decent start to the game, pressing Sibir deep in their own zone. Sergei Shirokov had a perfect chance to open the scoring, but he failed to connect with a superb pass across the slot. Sergei Plotnikov thought that he had scored on the powerplay, however it was ruled that goaltender interference was involved. Sibir barely threatened in the period, forcing Mikko Koskinen into only four saves.
Predticably, SKA stepped it up in the second stanza. Sergei Plotnikov broke the deadlock on another powerplay, completing a beautiful passing play at point blank range. In the mood for more, SKA doubled the advantage immediately. Mikhail Maltsev won a faceoff draw, Dinar Khafizullin received the puck, and his wrister was deflected past Alexei Krasikov. Sibir were under pressure, but they did have some chances of their own towards the end of the stanza. Ivan Vereshchagin had their best opportunity, as he was denied by Mikko Koskinen on the doorstep.
Sibir weren't prepared to go down without a fight. Jonas Enlund cut SKA's lead in half midway through the third period, knocking the puck over Mikko Koskinen's blocker on the crease. The game was on a knife's edge, but SKA managed to score a crucial third marker. Evgeny Ketov moved out to the right wing, took aim, and his effort sailed into the far corner. Sibir wouldn't surrender though, and Simon Onerud found the net on a pacey breakaway. Thankfully, that's all Sibir would have time for. SKA beat the Novosibirsk outfit 3:2, claiming a record breaking 19th consecutive victory!
