In game one of the first round of the 2018/2019 KHL Gagarin Cup playoffs, SKA failed to take the initiative, conceding a 0:2 defeat after the opponents struck twice in the first period.
Two penalties taken by Patrik Hersley and Andrei Kuzmenko were punished to the full. On 18 minutes, Robin Hanzl broke the deadlock, before fellow Spartak forward Martins Karsums subsequently scored a second powerplay goal to give the visitors a 2:0 lead at the Saint Petersburg Ice Palace.
During the next two frames, SKA pressed to get back into the match, but opposing goalkeeper Julius Hudacek refused to be beaten as he saved all 30 shots he faced.
Game two is scheduled for 19:30 local time on February 28 in Saint Petersburg.
