In a tense encounter, SKA just came up short against Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod at the Ice Palace in the 2022/2023 KHL regular season, conceding a slender 1:2 defeat after a penalty shootout.

It was initially a great start for our team.

The deadlock was broken midway through the maiden stanza, as Dmitrij Jaskin powered clean through when shorthanded and carefully lifted his effort into the left corner.

The second stanza saw both sides create plenty of scoring opportunities.

With the two teams trading penalties on a regular basis, openings were being created. In our net, 27-year-old Vladislav Podyapolsky was certainly a busy man, as he was forced into making 18 saves in the second period alone.

Unfortunately, though, our goalkeeper was powerless with only 10 minutes remaining in regulation time.

Having managed to get in front of his marker, Torpedo forward Maxim Letunov deftly tipped Mikhail Orlov's effort beyond Podyapolsky.

Chances were wasted by the teams in the extra frame. In the ensuing penalty shootout, Ivan Kulbakov became a hero for the Nizhny Novgorod-based organisation, stopping all five SKA shots he faced while Artyom Mikheev grabbed the all-important winner for Torpedo.

SKA will now prepare to host Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 19:30 local time.
