In a exciting battle, SKA managed to see off HC Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod at the Saint Petersburg Ice Palace, hanging on to clinch a dramatic 4:3 triumph.
SKA, immediately taking the initiative, dominated the first period, and the deadlock was broken within nine minutes as Ivan Morozov thumped a powerful effort beyond the goalkeeper with Vasily Podkolzin contributing with the assist.
The match followed much the same pattern in the second stanza.
On the powerplay, Andrei Kuzmenko completed a flowing play to increase the advantage to three, before Jori Lehtera found the lurking Nail Yakupov with a wonderful pass who subequently went top shelf on Andrei Tikhomirov.
With the stanza drawing to a close, Anton Shenfeld clawed one back for Torpedo, but Igor Ozhiganov promptly scored from the doorstep to reinstate the three-goal lead.
However, as the match continued, Torpedo suddenly gained a foothold and suddenly made it a rather nervy end to proceedings.
On the counter, Andrei Belevich got the better of Alexander Samonov, and with two SKA players in the penalty box, Denis Barantsev reduced the Torpedo deficit to just the one goal.
Nevertheless, SKA did manage to hold on in the closing minutes, securing a thrilling 4:3 triumph at home!
SKA will next take to the ice on Tuesday against Dinamo Minsk at home. Puck drop is scheduled for 19:30 local time.
