At the Saint Petersburg Ice Palace, SKA gave HC CSKA Moscow a run for their money in their second meeting of the 2019/2020 KHL regular season, but the visitors emerged victorious 3:2 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
The two evenly-matched teams kept it close in regulation. In the first period, Maxim Shalunov gave CSKA the lead, but Vladimir Tkachyov promptly equalised with a wonderful wrister over Ilya Sorokin's glove.
On the powerplay, Maxim Shalunov once again beat Alexei Melnichuk in the SKA net, handing the away side their second advantage of the day. However, on another man advantage, Vladimir Tkachyov sharply pulled to the slot with skill and knocked the puck into the net at point blank range.
SKA passed up a glorious 5-on-3 chance to win the match late in the third period and overtime.
Unfortunately, that proved to be crucial, as Linden Vey scored the only penalty shot in the ensuing shootout to emerge victorious 3:2. SKA will next play on Thursday at home against Salavat Yulaev Ufa.
