In Sochi, SKA competed in their first Sochi Hockey Open match against HC Kunlun Red Star from China. Head coach Oleg Znarok installed Mikko Koskinen between the pipes, while young forwards Mikhail Maltsev, Viktor Komarov and Alexander Dergachyov were all given a chance in the fourth line.
It turned out to be a game decided by the talents of Alexander Barabanov. SKA's number 94 scored two goals in the first period, but Kunlun's Brandon Yip got on the board between Alexander Barabanov's markers.
No goals were witnessed in the second stanza, but the game came to life in the third. Alexander Barabanov grabbed his hat trick, before Brandon Yip yet again got Kunlun to within one. Nevertheless, the match belonged to SKA. Alexander Barabanov iced it with an empty netter, scoring an incredible fourth goal and sealing a 4:2 SKA win!
